Evan Burkey Weeaboo Wednesday: Fall Season Is Upon Us

Posted by Evan Burkey On October - 15 - 2009   ZERO COMMENTS | 18 views

After a post-PAX hiatus due to life/work/aliens invading, Weeaboo Wednesday returns with a vengeance… at 11:15pm PST. It’s still technically Wednesday, right?

Ahh fall season… so many shows, so little time to watch them all. Regardless, I’ve done my best to watch everything from the new fall season that looks even remotely interesting, and I’m here to tell you what’s worth watching and what’s worth skipping. This week’s Weeaboo Wednesday will be a quick list, but you can expect the next couple weeks to cover, in depth, my top picks for this season, as well as my thoughts on what was great from the summer season. So go ahead and hit the break to check out my hit and miss list for all the newest shows, and feel free to follow along on the always-wonderful Chartfag’s season chart. (please click the header image for the full chart).

Disclaimer: The above video has nothing to do with anime or Weeaboo Wednesday. However, it’s the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while, so deal with it. It is also extremely NSFW.

The weather is getting warmer, the sun is coming out more… you know what that means: Summer is here. To most people that means the beach and bbqs, but to us pasty white nerds it means a new season of anime. In a continuation from last week’s Weeaboo Wednesday, I’ll be bringing you impressions and recommendations for the new summer anime season. So far this season has been hit and miss, but there is definitely some quality shows, so let’s jump right in.

The weather is getting warmer, the sun is coming out more… you know what that means: Summer is here. To most people that means the beach and bbqs, but to us pasty white nerds it means a new season of anime. Once again MWN brings you first impressions and reccomendations of what to hit and what to skip, so let’s jump right in. (And before you ask, there’s really no reason for the above picture except that it makes me laugh)

Xopher Reed Weeaboo Wednesday: Macross Frontier

(*note*: Admittedly, I am a humongous Macross fanboy so it will come as no surprise how glowing this review is.)

I was a child of the 80s and with that came exposure to a little show that many of us always think about when we talk about Anime in America in that time period. I am, of course, referring that Harmony Gold production that took 3 individual Anime series and smooshed them together with a tenuous storyline…Robotech.

After an extended hiatus due to me being way too busy with way too much stuff (then again, who isn’t these days?), Weeaboo Wednesday returns with force!

That’s right kids, we just had our first weekend in April, and you know what that means… new spring anime season! At first glance, there were not very many shows I was interested in this year, but in the spirit of being MWN’s Anime Samurai I’ve bit the bullet and watched as many shows as I could, in order to give you fellow weeaboos my first impressions. Remember to take these with a grain of salt, as the first episode of a show is not always indicative of the rest of the series (Lucky Star, I’m looking at you). I didn’t have a chance to watch everything on my list, so be on the lookout for round 2 next week.

Since today is Thursday, I figured I’d have to change the title of our not-so-punctual Weeaboo Wednesday. Just roll with it kiddies, there is something awesome contained within.

What’s cooler than watching a show about giant robots? Seeing a real (I use the term “real” loosely) giant robot. For those who aren’t Gundam-obsessed, like myself, 2009 is the 30th anniversary of the first airing of Mobile Suit Gundam. In honor of the series that catapulted the real robot genre into popularity, a 59-foot tall model of Gundam RX-78-2, the titular robot from Mobile Suit Gundam. This giant statue will fire mist out of 14 spots on it’s body, and be lit up by over 50 spotlights. Honestly, is this not the most awesome thing you’ve ever seen a digital mock-up of?

Evan Burkey Weeaboo Wednesday: Detroit Metal City

Posted by Evan Burkey On February - 25 - 2009   1 COMMENT | 17 views

I love metal, so when I heard that there was a series called Detroit Metal City (an obvious play on KISS’s Detroit Rock City) that was about a crazy metal band, I had to see it. I’ve always been a fan of Japanese metal, and a comedy OVA series about the subject sounded right up my alley. Let me tell you, Detroit Metal City does not disappoint.

Evan Burkey Weeaboo Wednesday: Top 10 Anime Openings

Posted by Evan Burkey On February - 4 - 2009   3 COMMENTS | 25 views

Anime openings are a very important part of modern anime. They can set the tone for the entire show, and give an idea of whats to come just through music and random scenes. They can also turn people on and off the show before they ever watch any actual content. This list contains my personal 10 favorite anime openings. I could have made it 20 or 30, but I stuck to that good old industry standard of 10, since that’s what the kids seem to like. I also recommend that everyone watch the shows listed here, as they are all, like their openings, quite excellent.

#10 – Detroit Metal City

Detroit Metal City – Satsugai

Detroit Metal City is not for the easily offended, and neither is this opening. That being said, Detroit Metal City is an incredibly funny show that I recommend everyone sees. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more appropriate opening that encapsulates the whole idea of the show. Rape, murder, violence… it’s all included in Satsugai. Of course, the point is to take the graphic nature of the song with a grain of salt; this is a satirical look at death metal after all.

Hit the jump to see the rest of the list.

One of the bigger problems anime fans run into is the method of how we get our sweet, sweet anime. If money isn’t an issue, then buying overpriced DVD sets is the way to go. If you’re like me, and money is tight, you have to resort to seedier methods like bittorrent. However, I’ve discovered a legitimate way to get a substantial amount of anime on the cheap. My friends, let me introduce you to the wonderful world of Netflix.

Netflix offers both DVDs through the mail and streaming movies over the Internet. They have multiple service plans, but the one that I have and think is the best deal is the 1 at-a-time plan. This plan allows you to have 1 DVD sent to you by mail, and gives you unlimited streaming from their instant streaming selection. As a movie aficionado, the instant streaming definitely caught my eye. No more searching for worthwhile torrents or buying overpriced DVDs is definitely worth my $8.99 a month. In case you’re still on the fence, here’s some reasons why you might want to take a look at Netflix.

Evan Burkey Weeaboo Wednesday: Toradora!

Posted by Evan Burkey On October - 29 - 2008   5 COMMENTS | 10 views

Alright, fellow MWN’ers, I’ve got to make a serious confession. I am a 14 year old japanese girl trapped inside an overweight 22 year old male. In other words, I have a very soft spot for shoujo anime, which to you non-weeaboos is the equivalent of romantic comedy. Something about the way anime portrays the genre clicks with me. I find it hilarious and heart warming. Alright, so I’m totally girly. Go ahead and laugh.

The reason I say this is so you understand why I’m about to go nuts for Toradora!. A new show this season, Toradora! is the anime adaptation of light novels and manga of the same name. Basically, this show is awesome. It has everything I look for in shoujo anime. Toradora! has the right amount of humor mixed with its “awwww” moments.

Evan Burkey Weeaboo Wednesday: Gundam 00 Season 2 Impressions

Posted by Evan Burkey On October - 22 - 2008   ZERO COMMENTS | 13 views

One of the best series to come out of last year’s anime season was Mobile Suit Gundam 00. The fast paced action mixed with intense storytelling set it apart as a must watch series. Another things that set Gundam 00 apart was the top notch high definition animation, which was a first for the Gundam series. Gundam 00 was such a big hit that it is currently in its second season. How does season two stack up? Hit the jump to find out. Be forewarned, there will be spoilers for season one, but not for season two.
