Xopher Reed Mid-day Ska Song of the Day!

Posted by Xopher Reed On March - 31 - 2009   ZERO COMMENTS | 9 views

There are some songs from Sublime that make me glad that the group doesn’t exist anymore and then there are the gems that are hidden around all of the commecial songs the group made such as this song off of their self-titled album. “April 29, 1992 (Miami)” is a chronicling the bands’ involvement in the race riots over the Rodney King court decision where they discuss getting their recording equipment and high priced liquor. It’s a great song for those that want to revel in the moments of anarchy that this country gets to participate in every once in a while.

Man, Slayer came back in a big way for me back in 2006 with the release of Christ Illusion, I had no idea they even were back in the studio recording until I saw them live on The Henry Rollins Show on IFC. The track “Eyes of the Insane” chronicles a veteran of the 2nd Gulf War and his descent into madness and eventually his death. It was featured on the Saw III soundtrack and even won a Grammy for “best Metal performance” the year it came out.

Jamie Gibson A Brit Late: Resident Evil Degeneration

degeneration

Day of release: December 24th 2008
Watched: March 14th 2009

After seeing the abomination that was Resident Evil: Extinction, I was pretty much put off any future movies based off the Resident Evil series. However when I first learnt of Resident Evil: Degeneration, it grabbed my attention because it was actually based within the game’s universe and featured the stars of Resident Evil 2, Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. That and the promise of zombies persuaded me to watch it. I never got around to it though until the release of Resident Evil 5 when I thought I would watch the animated film to celebrate said game’s release. Would this film surprise me or would it be just another shit video game movie? Hit the jump to find out.

While I’m breaking the boundaries today with how music is categorized (see this morning’s Cup o’ Metal post) I thought that I’d let Matisyahu have a spot on the ska song of the day. While he really is reggae done with an orthadox Jewish slant, it’s good music no matter how you cut it. This track “Youth” is off the album that features the same name and is a crowning achievement for American reggae.

Shown in the video is new gameplay physics, enemy AI, placeholder cut-scenes, horrible text to speech dialogue, and a few other surprises. I guess Commander Shepherd isn’t dead after all! I know that BigPopaGamer and I will be the first two nerds in line to pick up this game when it finally decides to come out.

Ryan Wilson Terrible Video Game Movies + J-Pop = Success?

I made this video back in 2006, when I was still fresh in my first year of college (and still older than Gibbo). Obviously I didn’t go to school for my editing skills. The video is a mashup of clips from the movie Double Dragon and the song Koi no Dance Site, featured in the game Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan.

This is one of those groups that I just stumbled upon one day and might not exactly fit the description of a ‘metal’ band but damnit, they’re close enough! Ok, so I Am Ghost are unapologetically Goth, but at least they have a great sound and the male and female vocals work together rather well. It’s just too bad that the group couldn’t get along with each other. Shortly after releasing Lovers’ Requiem the female vocalist and bass player (married) left the group and were replaced. Anyways, enjoy “Our Friend Lazarus Sleeps” we’ll catch you again in the morning.

I’m guessing that unless you’re a huge ska fan or are from New York, then you’ve probably never heard of The Slackers. These guys started recording in 2001 when the rest of the world seems to have forgotten about the world of ska.

After the success of their previous album, the group decided to keep going with the politically themed lyrics on their International War Criminal EP that came out in 2003. It’s on this album that you can find the tune you’re listening to right now. Pretty damn good group that will keep ska alive into the 2010s (I hope).

It’s Sunday morning, and if you’re up this early, I’m sorry. But at least here’s a wee nip of metal to get you woken up a bit, and its a Dragon Ball Z AMV (anime music video) to boot.

You gotta love the melodic metalcore that Bullet for my Valentine does, in one hand it’s heavy, but in the other, its completely foot-tappable. This track “Cries in Vain” can be found on the album, Hand of Blood and is an excellent CD to have in your collection.

Xopher Reed Strange Brews: The Evil Dead

Much like this guy caught a shotgun to the face, you are cautioned to take it easy with these and for the love of Crom, don't light the motherfuckers on fire, please? The last thing I need is a potential lawsuit.

My hero, Bruce Campbell in his career defining role as Ash in Sam Raimi’s third installment of the Evil Dead series (better known as Army of Darkness) said this to his love-interest Shiela: “Don’t touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn’t understand alloys and compositions and things with… molecular structures.”

This is my exact warning to you, don’t touch this recipe unless you understand what the fuck you’re doing.

I’m serious, this shot can potentially kill/maim you in one of 2 apparent ways, either somehow you or your property catches fire and hilarity ensues, or you underestimate how much liquor is in these drinks and proceed to have one to many. So with all warnings aside I’ll share the recipe and how to make the bastards.

This morning, I featured a video by Pantera that had some of the most amazing vocals in metal to date, and I thought I’d continue that by introducing you to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones if you’ve never heard them before (which would be a feat).

“A Jackknife to a Swan” is the titular track from their 2003 release that was their last work together before the group started their 4-year hiatus. I personally love each and every track from this album, but I do get annoyed with Dicky Barrett’s voice after listening to them for a while. The guy knows how to sing but sometimes gets a bit unintelligible. Regardless this was an excellent video that I found just the other day that I thought I should share with my whores out there!

Holy crap, how could I have let this series go on so long without including a Pantera song until now? Man I remember seeing these guys with Clutch and Nerosis during their Cowboys From Hell tour and they caught the audience by surprise. You know those lags that happen between groups that most people go outside to smoke or over to the concession area to grab a beer? Well, Pantera being sneaky bastards decided to put up a curtain so we couldnt see them setting up.

Instead of the 30-40 minutes it takes for the road crew to get things set up, they had it done like 10 minutes after the one band left. They didn’t even bother dropping the lights until this song was into its first couple of measures. I wish that I could express the amount of shock that was on everyone’s face when “Strength Beyond Strength” kicked in with its visceral guitars and gluttoral lyrics…it’s as if you had a Red-Bull mixed in a 20 oz cup of espresso, a serious kick to the face.

Oh man going back, like way back, over 20 years ago 4 guys decided to become a ska group and we got Operation Ivy. Two years later, they were done and called it quits. Half the band went on to form Rancid and help usher America’s love of punk back into the mainstream. The song playing above is “Soundsystem” off of the band’s most popular album made, Energy. Pick up this album whenever you can because it was groups like Operation Ivy that helped the third wave ska movement pick up.
