Xopher Reed A Weird Kid’s Top 10 — DOS Games

Posted by Xopher Reed On October - 31 - 2008   3 COMMENTS | 52 views

Anyone that knows me personally, knows that I am first and foremost a console gamer. It’s been that way since the early 90s when I first wrapped my grubby mitts around a SNES controller. However, during those defining years for software developers, there WAS a time where I was a console gamer and an avid PC gamer. Unfortunately, with all of the exponential advances that PCs have been making over the last ten years or so, I’ve grown cold at the thought of being a PC gamer again.

I’m sure I would enjoy many of the games that are out on PCs these days; I just don’t want to pay $600+ to have a somewhat entry level PC that can run games at an “ok” level. Even more unbelievable are some of the people paying almost 3 grand on a ‘gaming’ rig. I have my gaming ‘rig’ hooked up to my TV, its called an Xbox 360.

Before you get the wrong idea guys, let me explain that there WAS a time where PC gaming wasn’t that hard to have the right system requirements to play. This magical age came forth mainly for me in the mid 90s right before you HAD to have Windows installed on your computer to play games…that’s right, I’m going there back to the good ‘ol days where you played games using MS-DOS.

Andy Futurama Gets Knocked Up A Notch: Bender’s Game

Posted by Andy On October - 31 - 2008   2 COMMENTS | 28 views

I fell in love with Futurama from the very first time I saw the pilot and have been hooked ever since. Any fan of the series will be glad to know that Bender’s Game keeps up the trend of geeky jokes, hilarious parody and great story that is the staple of the Futurama universe.

Bender’s Game is the third in the series of straight to DVD Futurama movies, following on from Bender’s Big Score and more recently. The Beast With A Billion Backs. The plot of the movie follows the Planet Express crew as they try find out the reason behind the sudden dark matter shortage by infiltrating the universe’s only dark matter mine, ran by MOM Corp. What they encounter when they get there is a far stranger world of fantasy, dungeons, AND dragons.

Andy A Brit Late: Casino Royale Review

Posted by Andy On October - 31 - 2008   ZERO COMMENTS | 4 views

Release Date: 16 November 2006 (UK)

Lateness: Almost 2 years

With the new bond movie just around the corner I decided to gather some friends and sit down for the first in the reboot of the franchise. This may have been a mistake, after talking to a few mates and seeing if they would want to come round and watch it I noticed a pattern to each conversation:

Me: “So I was thinking of getting some people together to watch Casino Royale before the new movie comes out, you interested?”

Friend: “Yeah Sure, I haven’t seen that since it came out”

Me: “I’ve never seen it!”

Friend: *Stares at me blankly* “What? Are you kidding me? How could you not have seen it?”

Me: “I just missed it”

Friend: “How can you just miss James Bond?”

etc.

As you can see, people were NOT impressed and each person I spoke to made it their personal mission to make sure I saw this movie.

Ryan Wilson The Dark Knight: A Late to the Party Review

Posted by Ryan Wilson On October - 30 - 2008   ZERO COMMENTS | 2 views

Release date: July 18, 2008

Lateness: 3 months

The Dark Knight was easily one of the most hyped movies in the past year. In fact, the last year had pretty much been nothing but hype for this movie’s release. After the untimely death of actor Heath Ledger, the hype reached disgusting high levels. Its release broke box office records left and right, and people wondered if it would become the highest grossing film of all time (A position that Titanic held with a colossal $600 million total gross).

The hype has now finally died down three months later. Though it did not best $600 million, it did make an admirable $527 million, making it the second highest grossing film. Now, with 10 dollars in my pocket and constant bugging by friends I saw the movie.

And I’m glad I waited.

Greg Lockwood DO WANT! Futurama Might Return As A Full-Time Series

Posted by Greg Lockwood On October - 29 - 2008   5 COMMENTS | 7 views

Yes, it’s true. One of the best, and definitely the most underrated “animated sitcom” of our time, Futurama, just might be coming back. Before your dick gets too big, there’s no definitive word that it will return, just speculation. David X. Cohen, the man responsible for Futurama, along with Matt Groening, recently did an interview with SCI FI Wire where he gave us this new found hope.

“Now, what the chances are [of coming back], I have no idea, the hard facts would seem to support us coming back again. From what we have heard, the DVDs have sold very well, and I have heard the phrase ‘greatly exceeded’ 20th Century Fox’s expectations. So that’s got to be a good sign, you would think.”

Man, what I wouldn’t give to have this show back on the air every week. The DVDs are great and all, but they just can’t scratch that weekly itch. Speaking of the DVDs, if you haven’t already, you should go out and buy the first two, Bender’s Big Score and The Beast With a Billion Backs, buy Bender’s Game when it comes out on November 4, and, buy Into the Wild Green Yonder when it comes out next spring. If you don’t, we’re not going to get new Futurama, and that makes you an asshole in my book. Besides, Hypnotoad demands it.

Evan Burkey Weeaboo Wednesday: Toradora!

Posted by Evan Burkey On October - 29 - 2008   5 COMMENTS | 8 views

Alright, fellow MWN’ers, I’ve got to make a serious confession. I am a 14 year old japanese girl trapped inside an overweight 22 year old male. In other words, I have a very soft spot for shoujo anime, which to you non-weeaboos is the equivalent of romantic comedy. Something about the way anime portrays the genre clicks with me. I find it hilarious and heart warming. Alright, so I’m totally girly. Go ahead and laugh.

The reason I say this is so you understand why I’m about to go nuts for Toradora!. A new show this season, Toradora! is the anime adaptation of light novels and manga of the same name. Basically, this show is awesome. It has everything I look for in shoujo anime. Toradora! has the right amount of humor mixed with its “awwww” moments.

Xopher Reed Red-Light Roundtable Episode 6 Teaser

Posted by Xopher Reed On October - 29 - 2008   2 COMMENTS | 1 views

Hey there MediaWhores, we thought that for the upcoming episode we’ll have a discussion about American politics…seeing how next Tuesday will be election day here in the united states and we Americans will either get a relatively inexperienced president with a slightly crazy vice president with awesome teeth, OR we’ll get a near octogenarian that can’t give a high five and has a running mate that sounds like the mother on Bobby’s World (look it up kids…Howie Mandel?) and was caught on video getting a blessing from a guy who actually sponsors witch hunts.

No matter who you pick, America will lose one way or another, so let’s all have a drink and welcome the end of the shrub’s presidency while bullshitting about stuff that is obviously over our heads. Yeah we know that our political episode may not reach the ears of anyone influential, and that most of you are sick of this race that has been limping along for almost 19 months now…just think in less than a week, it will all be decided for us by the electoral college!!!

So with that all being said, expect this to be one of the few times where we reveal our personal politics for your pleasure. As always, if there are any of you whores out there that want their segment to be used during the break, you should submit it to my email: Xopher.Reed@mediawhorenetwork.com, you can also email me any questions that you want us to ponder over and discuss. Recording is slated to happen sometime before Sunday night, so get off your asses you sluts and submit me some stuff! Can we get at least one question from SOMEONE out there?!? Please?

Andy MWN Reviews: Fable II

Posted by Andy On October - 29 - 2008   ZERO COMMENTS | 1 views

Box Art

Going into this review as a huge fan of the original Fable, but knowing the pitfalls hype and fanboyism can create, I was cautiously optimistic of all of the things that Fable II promised to achieve. I know how Peter Molyneux turns into an excitable child around his creations and cannot help but divulge information on things that may not ever make it into the final version of the game. I’ll try and avoid spoilers for the large part but minor details may be revealed.

For the longest time, I’ve had no issue paying full price for most games that come out…until this generation. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve bought many a $60 game for both my Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, I just now feel like I shouldn’t have to. I always assigned a certain stigma to buying used games or even ‘greatest hits’ versions, and I don’t know where it came from. This all changed the day that I started rummaging through the bargain bin at my local GameStop (sorry, I know there are some of you who are totally against GameStop, but they’re all I have locally).

My first rummage through the bargain bin netted me a few games that I had been meaning to either play or own for about $5 each. I couldn’t believe that I could pick up games that were good for a tenth of the normal price. I guess it was the fact that I could pick up 12 used games for the price of 1 new game that sold me on the idea…and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Greg Lockwood For Your Listening Pleasure: Remanufacture

Posted by Greg Lockwood On October - 28 - 2008   ZERO COMMENTS | 2 views

As you might be able to tell from my last FYLP, I am a big fan of remixes. I love hearing other people take on a song, I love hearing how a song can evolve into something else, I just love everything about a good remix. But this certainly doesn’t stop at rap/hip-hop remixes. Any genre of song is susceptible to the remix, and one of the most interesting genres of music to be remixed is metal. Metal is very straight forward, and usually one can’t imagine metal being anything but metal, which is why I applaud Fear Factory for putting out a very different, very original remix album.

maxio Shmup Goodness Coming Soon

Posted by maxio On October - 28 - 2008   ZERO COMMENTS | 1 views

In the heat of the fall games extravaganza everyone is waiting for the big games. Fallout, Gears of War 2. or is going broke from buying games that have already come out like Fable 2 and of course Deadspace.

There are people waiting for something else, something obscure, not usually for the average person from the West (as in not Japerneese). This month we are lucky enough to see the release of two amazing shmups (aka: shoot ‘em ups).

BunnyRabbit2 Meta Review: Dead Space

Posted by BunnyRabbit2 On October - 28 - 2008   ZERO COMMENTS | 1 views

You may have heard about Dead Space. You might have seen how everyone is rating it pretty good, even those people who do not normally play survival horrors. There has been a lot of promotion and marketing for Dead Space from creepy as hell trailers, to a six part comic, and even an animated tie in.

The basics premise of the game is that you are an engineer going around a large ship called the Ishimura trying to fix things and not die while doing so.

Brad Holman A Movie to Die for: Saw V Review

Posted by Brad Holman On October - 27 - 2008   ZERO COMMENTS | 5 views

For five years now I have kept a personal streak of mine going. Every October I have looked forward to two things. 1. Halloween – to see how slutty some girls dress and no one says a thing, and 2. for the new installment in the Saw series. This year marked the fifth year I have been going to see these movies on opening weekend and I look forward to them every year.

So needless to say, I was very excited to go see Saw V. Even though I think they are milking the series a little bit, the sold out shows on opening night told me these films were becoming more than just popular amongst the horror fans and had become a Halloween tradition for many people. Both myself and Xopher Reed saw it so our opinions are both here.  So how did our expectations stack up this year? Click on the link and listen to the message.

Xopher Reed RLR Episode 5: Metal

My fellow whores, I present to you the best show that we have ever had on the Red-Light Roundtable. The idea for a metal episode guaranteed that we would have a great podcast, and now here it is for your enjoyment.

It was me and BigPopaGamer as usual, but we had one of our UK contributors (BunnyRabbit2) sitting in the third seat and he gave us a good view of what metal scene is like over in England. About halfway through the podcast, thef1sh magically showed up and stuck with us through the podcast. Although he may not be a metalhead, it’s still refreshing to hear the opinions of someone who isn’t a fan.
